Warner Bros. Announces Release Date for Batman 3: The Dark Knight Sequel

The highly anticipated sequel to the Dark Knight (“Batman 3,” “Untitled Batman Project,” “The Dark Knight Returns,” etc.) will be released on July 20, 2012, according to an announcement by Warner Bros. Batman 3 will debut in conventional and IMAX theaters almost exactly four years after “The Dark Knight” opened.

“The Dark Knight” opened in theaters to a record-smashing $158.4 million, which has yet to be beaten in an opening weekend. It became the second film ever to earn more than $500 million at the box office, the fourth film to gross over a billion dollars worldwide, and set numerous other records in the process. At the 81st Academy Awards it received a total of eight Academy Award nominations, winning in two categories: Best Sound Editing and Best Supporting Actor (a posthumous win for Heath Ledger), making it the second Batman film ever to win at the Academy Awards.

Batman 3 will be directed by Christopher Nolan and will be again written by Jonothan Nolan. Christian Bale will be returning as Batman along with Gary Oldman (as Commissioner Gordon), Morgan Freeman (as Lucius Fox) and Michael Caine (as Alfred).

Nolan was educated at Haileybury College, an independent school at Hertford Heath in Hertfordhire, England, and later studied English literature at University College London while filming several short films in the college film society.

The summer of 2012 is shaping up to be a major blockbuster movie season. Marvel’s “The Avengers” is set for May 4, “Madagascar 3” is coming on May 18, board-game adaptation “Battleship” is set for May 25, “Brave” from Disney/Pixar is set for June 15, the “Star Trek” sequel is coming on June 29, the rebooted “Spider-Man” is set for July 3 and “Batman 3” is slated for July 20.
